Approach to Counseling
Jen’s Approach
When working with clients, I practice a prescriptive approach, integrating directive and non-directive methods.
What are directive methods? I play an active role in our work by guiding you, challenging you when appropriate, offering advice and recommendations, and always supporting you in a safe and welcoming environment.
What are non-directive methods? I am following your lead. I think this method is best described in this way “metaphorically, the therapist is walking alongside the client—sometimes a few paces behind, sometimes a few paces ahead, sometimes stopping to discuss where to go next, but always going wherever the client goes. The therapist never chooses the direction” (Stephen Joseph, Psychology Today)
As a counselor, I believe growth takes place in a space that is warm, welcoming, and recognizes where you are in in your own journey. I offer counseling services to adults, adolescents, and children.
Hannah’s Approach
My approach to counseling is neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed, and collaborative. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and therapy works best when we move at your pace and focus on what truly matters to you.
I draw from person-centered, solution-focused, and strengths-based approaches, tailoring therapy to your unique needs and goals. Sessions are designed to be a space where you can show up as you are without judgment, pressure, or expectations to “have it all figured out.”
Working together may include:
A safe, supportive space to explore thoughts and emotions at your own pace
Identifying and building on your existing strengths
Creative problem-solving and flexible coping strategies
Celebrating progress, including the small wins
A counseling environment that feels human, warm, and approachable
Therapy does not have to look like traditional talk therapy alone. I also incorporate expressive arts, sandtray, and play-based interventions when helpful, especially for emotional regulation, self-expression, and processing experiences that are hard to put into words.
People who often benefit from my approach:
Adults who feel different, misunderstood, or out of place
Neurodivergent individuals seeking affirming support
Individuals navigating anxiety, burnout, or emotional overwhelm
LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking a safe and affirming space
People living with chronic illness or ongoing health stress
Parents and caregivers balancing personal and family needs
I offer counseling for adults, teens, children, and parents. If you are interested in seeing whether we might be a good fit, I invite you to reach out to schedule a free phone consultation.
